Speciesism in the Modern Meat Industry

“But it takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal”

–Joaquin Phoenix

As consumers, Americans vote with their money.  They vote on what practices they approve of, which corporate values they like or dislike, and even which corporate-funded politicians they support.  The American people, however, are often unaware of the ‘your money is your vote’ phenomenon and don’t take advantage of it, or they are unaware of what they are truly voting for on a daily basis.  Specifically, people are generally unaware of the meat industry and its immoral practices regarding the active exploitation of animals for the sake of consumption and profit.  People ignorantly purchase from this corrupt industry without regard to the animals harmed in order to get their food to their table.  The American meat industry as a whole is extremely problematic.  In this system, profit comes before anything else, especially morality.  Speciesism dominates the meat industry and reinforces the notion that other Earthly beings are only present to serve humankind’s selfish needs.  Within this system, there exists a speciesist ideology that assumes “human superiority, leading to the exploitation of animals and other natural resources.” [1]
